Chevy Sonic Faceoff

Written by Corey Mullane | Monday, 14 February 2011 | 10 comments

The Chevy Sonic is the newly announced member of the Chevy family and one that might be the source of lots of future ECOtec fun. Sonic has the highly anticipated LUJ powerplant that we covered last year, LUJ Delivers on ECOtec Promise, and have seen previously only motivating the Chevy Cruze. Now imagine having the 138hp iron block, turbo 1.4L having to propel only about 2400lbs. That sounds like it could be a serious street terror with a little tuning.

The only issue we see, is that there are two flavors of Chevy Sonic to be had – one with a hatchback, and one in the traditional sedan layout. So which one to choose? Do you stand on the side of increased utility in the five-door, or ditching the euro-styling in favor of the classic American lines that a sedan offers?

The choice is yours, let us know what you think is the winner. To help you choose, we’ve included some clean shots of both to give you an uncluttered opportunity to decide what you’d rather sit in come this fall.

Vote now in the poll to the right and get in your thoughts below. Go!

I'm going with the hatchback. It's about time GM made hatch worth looking at. The LUJ is showing to have quite some potential as well from what I have seen.

Gimme the sedan a more rigid body is always welcome with me all sedans that have been made to hatches all suffer the same fate, a softer chasis and less g's in the skidpad. Just look at the sti hatch and sti sedan, the Mazda speed 3 hatch and Mazda 3 sedan... only 2 I can think of for now, but if you want a rigid chasis and in my opinion a better looking car you must go with the sedan

the hatch or even a two door hatch would be hot i'd think kind of like the 2dr cobalt coupe maybe but i'd love to see an option of a 2dr hatch along with the 4dr hatch....maybe even have an SS model with the LNF? lol woot woot i can only dream X-D

They need to do better than the LUJ or at least it's standard 138hp! It won't even meet the power/weight ratio of the Fiat 500 Abarth (US model is rumored to be around 160hp).

22HP? You are seriously gonna worry about 22HP? That would be easily overcome with a more agressive exhaust, intake, and tunning package.

Just put a deposit on my sedan, with 6sp and turbo. I had to special order it because the dealerships are all flooded with automatic trannys with no turbos. 6-8 weeks and I'll be happy. Intake and exhaust will be the first upgrades, then maybe an upgraded intercooler, who knows?
