If you're a fan of underdogs, then you're going to hate the new Cobalt SS Turbo. The Cobalt SS has been fighting for respect from the sports car market since it entered in 2005 and with the newest incarnation of the Cobalt SS bringing a 2.0L direct-injected and turbocharged ECOtec to the party, it doesn't need your pity.
As the folks from Car & Driver Magazine found out in their November 2008 issue, on newsstands now, the Cobalt SS has a chip on its shoulder and thinks it's too good to play with the other kids on its block. Car & Driver brought the Cobalt SS out to its 2008 Lightning Lap, which pits 22 of today's hottest sports cars against each other at Virginia International Raceway on the same day, under the same conditions. The drivers that took the Cobalt SS out for a hot lap were surprised with the excellent grip, stout chassis and fade-free brakes the new Cobalt SS provided. But let's be real here, the new Cobalt SS costs $22,995, and would never be able to hang with a $55,425 Supercharged Lotus Elise.
Right? Wrong!
The Cobalt SS was classified as a LL1 car (under $30,000) and it ran away from all the other cars in its class, but then it also did something no one was expecting; it beat eleven cars in the higher price point LL2 class ($30,000 - $60,000). The Cobalt SS took out the Mitsubishi EVO X MR, Lexus IS F, Dodge Challenger SRT8 and the aforementioned Lotus Elise SC; beating the latter by more than 3.6 seconds around the 4.2 mile road course.
