After almost a decade of trouncing every competitor, the reign of supremacy for Corvette Racing in the GT1 class is over. With no foes left to battle, the team at Corvette Racing is ready to draw blood again, even if they have to change classes to do it. Out of the GT1 ashes comes a GT2 phoenix and might we say, this phoenix is a looker. Not only does the new C6.R make us do a double take but it also is ripe with new hardware on the inside to meet GT2 class requirements. That being said, it’s a big day for Corvette Racing and an even bigger day for their new GT2 competitors, as they have to start worrying about exacting what the Corvette Racing slogan "Take No Prisoners" entails.

Corvette Racing debuted in 1999 with their GT1 C5-R that wasn't exactly a piece of fine art. However, the team at Corvette Racing did what they do best and made it work. After only two years under their belt they pulled out the Team Championship in 2001 and never looked back. They racked up another three Team Championship wins before switching to the C6.R platform in 2005. Teams looked for a weakness in the new C6.Rs only to discover that they were even faster than their C5-R predecessors. This dominance eventually left Corvette standing as the king of a hill no one wanted. Not one for racing themselves, Corvette Racing had to reinvent their vehicle to compete where the players were and that brings us to today.

The GT2 class is a production vehicle focused class, which means less room for custom go-fast parts. This is good news for Corvette owners, as this means a possibility for more ALMS-derived speed goodies for street driven Corvettes. Improvements are vast in this new GT2 C6.R and start with a ZR1-sourced aluminum chassis and extend to ZR1-based fenders and body panels as well as ZR1-inspired aerodynamic modifications. Not very ZR1-like is the power that actually takes quite a dive to keep in line with class regulations and now sits at 470hp and 535lb.-ft, which is a decrease of over 100 in each category. Adding to that the fact that the GT2 C6.R is 165 pounds heavier and it creates a very different driving experience for the talented drivers at Corvette Racing. With a heritage of 77 wins and eight consecutive ALMS championships, we’re not too worried about their chances though.

It seems like Corvette Racing is ready to hit the front lines come their first race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this weekend. They come equipped with the backing of all of their previous sponsors: Compuware retaining the primary sponsor position, Mobil 1 supplying the high performance, low-friction lubricants they are known for and Michelin helping keep the C6.R planted firmly to the track. The team says they aren’t running for a championship this year but we wouldn’t be true fans if we didn’t hope they captured one anyway. You can watch the new C6.R make its maiden voyage on Sunday, August 9th on ABC at 2:30 EDT.
