Half of a Billion Dollars Towards Next-Gen ECOtecs

Nope, that’s not a typo. GM is serious about the ECOtec platform and they’re showing it in a big way – by committing $494 million dollars towards the development of the next line of fuel efficient and performance producing ECOtec engines. That’s some big news and needless to say, we’re pretty stoked about. The funds will primarily be used towards building upon the ECOtec’s industry-leading direct injection, variable valve timing and turbocharging technologies.

Notably, the ECOtec engines have spearheaded many, now industry standard, practices of direct injection and VVT. Further enhancing these technologies will lead to better performing and more fuel efficient motors – but to us that just means less stops at the pump and more time with the pedal beneath our feet.

The ECOtec engine platform has already won two Ward’s 10 Best Engine Awards with the LSJ and LE5 in 2006 and 2010 respectively. Now with 1/2 a billion dollars steering the ECOtec program we can only see good roads ahead.

What do you see the future for the ECOtec being? Maybe a 2.0L Turbo making 350hp out of the gate… an N/A 2.0L making 250hp? Let us know your dream ECOtec in the comments below.
