GM turns up the heat at NDRA Phoenix

The second event of the season - NDRA Phoenix. It approached 100 degrees in Phoenix, a shock to those of us who flew out of snowy conditions in the Midwest and Northeast. In fact, Don Nase Jr., driver of the ECOtec-powered dragster, almost didn't make it at all. He faced canceled flights and a sleepless night spent at JFK airport just to make it to Firebird Raceway in time for the final qualifying round on Saturday. He left the event a winner, so hopefully that made up for the struggles in getting there.

Our other winning Chevy drivers in Phoenix were Jason Hunt in Pro Outlaw FWD and Brian Ballard (pictured) in Turbo Street.

Firebird Raceway is located in the hometown of Tom Shambaugh, owner and driver of a RWD ECOtec-powered Chevy Cavalier. Tom was a great host for the weekend and took good care of us overheated and hungry GM Racing people.

We set Tom up with our new F.A.S.T engine controller, base calibration, and wiring harness. Tom made his best pass ever, an 8.27-second run, on a soft tune. With the ECOtec race engine making reliable power, Tom and his ETID Motorsports team can concentrate on refining the chassis setup to maximize power to the ground. Tom built his Modified Chevy Cavalier chassis and ECOtec race engine from the ground-up in his shop at his home in Chandler, AZ. We at GM Racing couldn’t be more impressed. And, even better, Tom and his team are Chevy through and though. They all work for Brown & Brown Chevrolet, a dealer in Mesa Arizona. Team members roll in two Chevy Silverado pick-up trucks (one of them lowered), a special edition Chevy HHR, and a juiced Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged.

Speaking of that Cobalt SS. . . Owned and modified by ETID Motorsports team member Randy Oaklief of Gilbert, AZ, it makes 287hp at the wheel on the engine and 378hp with the help of a 75shot of Nitrous (the bottle is hidden discreetly under the trunk compartment). Randy fabricated his own custom exhaust manifold, which accounts for about 9 added horses. He has an Intense Stage 3 kit and ECM reflash, high-speed valve springs from Bates Engineering, adjustable cam gears, Fujita air intake, urethane motor mounts, NGK spark plugs, 60lb injectors, and a brand new set of drag radials. Randy’s previous car was a 500hp Chevy Corvette (ran 11.90s on street tires), leaving the new Cobalt with some big shoes to fill. The Cobalt has been such a great replacement that even Randy is surprised.
