ECOtec Invades Midget Racing

It'€™s pretty well known now that the ECOtec powerplant is a bulletproof package no matter what you strap it into. ECOtec engines have been put in all sorts of motorsport and always seem to come out on top of the podium. In everything from Time Attack and Drag Racing to Drifting and Powerboat Racing, the common factor they all share is an ECOtec heart that pumps fuel and air better than any of its competitors. Knowing this, it was only a matter of time until grassroots enthusiasts got a hold of the tremendous ECOtec platform to bring a new competitive edge to Midget Racing.

Keith Laia of Revolution Racing Engines sat down with his crew to develop their vision of what a state-of-the-art Midget Racing engine would look like. Luckily, after looking through engine specs from every major engine manufacturer, Iaia stumbled upon the 2.4L LE9 ECOtec which seemed as if it was developed just for his purposes. Iaia then partnered with Jeff Kettman at GM Racing to further develop the 2.4L LE9 ECOtec for use in the custom application of a Midget car.

The ECOtec was chosen because of a recent call for an economical and reliable Midget Racing engine that delivered power to compete. The all-aluminum 2.4L LE9 ECOtec has been used in naturally-aspirated applications that deliver 325hp and turbo applications grossing over 1,450hp, all while being in a package that will last for season after season: a seemingly perfect match. The RRE/ Chevy ECOtec engine has many groundbreaking features including a full electronic engine management system featuring the latest GM MEFI 5 ECU, all internally driven pumps and a self-starting system.

There will be a new ASCS Midget division based on this new level of Midget car that will debut on the west coast in 2009 starting with the Capital City Midgets out of Sacramento. The new LE9 ECOtec Midget cars will make their first appearances as headliner and under-card roles for the ASCS2 Micro and ASCS Sprint Car shows respectively.
