HUGE Cobalt Success at NDRA Michigan

NOPI's NDRA nationally sanctioned Sport Compact drag racing came to Michigan for the first time ever this past weekend.

Chevy Cobalt teams Gardella Racing (driver Gary Gardella) and Charlie Schafer Industries (driver Jason Hunt) made Pro FWD racing look easy (I assure you, it is not). Both teams ran mid-sevens all weekend long.

In the second round of qualifying, Gary Gardella laid down a HUGE run at 204.59 mph, the fastest any Pro FWD car has ever gone. And in the final heat, Gary and Jason were side by side all the way down the track. The margin of victory was less than two tenths of a second, with the win going to Gary Gardella on a hole shot. It was one of the most exciting drag races we'€™ve seen, and congratulations go out to Gary and his team on their first win of 2007. Well deserved.

The heartbreaker of the weekend was Brian Ballard and his Turbo Street Chevy Cobalt. In qualifying, Brian ran 9.38- and 9.39-second passes. He advanced to the semifinals, but suffered a rare transmission issue at the start line. Brian'€™s K&N Chevy Cobalt is a blast to watch, and I know were we all disappointed that it went out early. Next time . . .

Don Nase Jr. also brought his ECOtec-powered dragster out to Milan Dragway to represent the NDRA Extreme class. He ran some blistering passes in the 6.50 second range at 206 and 207 mph. We thank Don for coming out; I'm sure it wasn'€™t easy to tear himself away from his new baby boy! Congrats on the new addition and a great performance.

As always, you can click over to Flickr for a full photo story of the exciting weekend at Milan.
