Corvette Racing Announces new 5.5L V8

When the Corvette Racing team decided to make the switch to the GT2 class last August, many aspects of the current car needed to be addressed in order for it to meet the new GT2 class requirements. For a short-term fix, a 6.0L version of the 7.0L GT1 powerhouse was created to meet demand. However, with revised rules regulating GT vehicles for 2010 and some off-season time, the crew at Corvette Racing has been developing a more production-based engine alternative - enter the new 5.5L V8.

Details on the new V8 are sketchy but right now all we know is that the new engine is currently going through dyno trials, is based on the new next-generation Chevy small block and will be ready for Sebring, according to Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan. Doug’s words about the new engine seem encouraging, which you read for yourself below.

Fehan: "GM Powertrain has completed the initial dynamometer tests of the 5.5-liter small-block V8, and the race team has conducted the first track test with the new engine. We are quite satisfied with its performance level at this point. We plan to continue development and introduce the 5.5-liter engine package in competition at Sebring."
