It was a long, but great, weekend at Atco Raceway in Atco, NJ.

It started off on Thursday with Pro FWD driver Gary Gardella facing off against Air Race pilot Kirby Chambliss during the Red Bull Air & Asphalt project (see previous post) and ended with a race event win, two runners-up, and lots of great head-to-head racing.

No surprise, it was a sweltering event at the NHRA Sport Compact Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Why they have this event in the middle of July, I can only imagine. . . and what I imagine is some evil character rubbing his hands together and chuckling as he envisions this experiment in heat torture, wondering if, maybe this year, someone will spontaneously combust. No one did.

Last weekend'€™s Indy event was one of the most anticipated events of the season, surpassed only by the upcoming U.S. Nationals event, in which only the Pro FWD and Pro RWD classes are invited to compete.

Woohoo! U.S. Nationals at O'€™Reiley Raceway Park!

The NHRA Sport Compact ProFWD class was privileged to be invited to this, the biggest drag race event of the year. It was a long event, stretched out over three days instead of our usual two, but well worth the extra time. Pro FWD put up an impressive qualifying lineup with the top three ECOtec-powered Chevy Cobalts running 7.15 seconds (Gardella), 7.17 seconds (Ladwig), and 7.19 seconds (Hunt).

At NOPI'€™s first Sportsman Only event this past weekend in Maryland the CSI team didn'€™t take any chances on their approach to this race. "We are running the car just like at the national events and not taking anything for granted,"€ stated Team Owner, Charlie Schafer at the start of the race. It was a good thing too, as the team still had to abide by the NOPI sanctioned by NHRA rules and qualified an impressive 3rd place.
