Who Owns Formula D Long Beach?
Written by Corey Mullane Wednesday, 15 April 2009

This weekend was a big day in the world of Drifting as it was the kickoff to the 2009 Formula Drift season in the Streets of Long Beach. Many of the top Drifters debuted with new vehicles for 2009 but none of them could outperform the Gardella Racing Mobil 1 Pontiac Solstice driven by Ryan Tuerck. We have done a few stories leading up to the debut of this car so many of you should be familiar with it. If not, please check on some of the older posts showing you both pictures and videos of this build. On Saturday April 11th, Ryan Tuerck took his Pontiac Solstice into battle against the top Drifters in the U.S. In the end, Ryan seem to cut his way through the field with ease and even beat out the famous Tanner Foust (2008 Formula D Champion) in a double overtime battle to get into the finals. This had the crowed going nuts as they started to see Tuerck, as the underdog, taking out the larger-than-life profiles in the Drifting community. At this point in the event, the Twitter-sphere really started to get exciting as many sources where sending out up to the second tweets about the competition and battle going on in Long Beach. So if you did not get a chance to make it to the event, there were many mediums tweeting all through the finals.
The final round was set. The crowed wanted more action and no one left their seats. The excitement and buzz in the atmosphere was very evident. The final round put Ryan Tuerck in his Gardella Racing Mobil 1 Pontiac Solstice up against 2-time Formula Drift Champion Sam Hubinette in his Dodge Viper. This is a proven platform for Sam as he has won championships and many events in this car. He was supposed to bring out his new Dodge Challenger Drift car but that did not see competition all weekend. So needless to say, the odds were heavily stacked against Ryan in his Solstice.
As the final round took place people were on their feet in anticipation and rightfully so. Ryan showed no mercy to Viper as he dissected the Drift course as good as anyone that whole day. It ended with Tuerck beating out two-time Formula D Champion, Samuel Hubinette, to capture the top spot on the podium! The media world has taken off with the results from this weekend, shedding a lot of light on the Pontiac Solstice and capabilities. We have said it many times here and will again – there is nothing like ECOtec power! Congratulations to the whole Gardella Racing Crew and Ryan Tuerck for your amazing victory in Long Beach. Stay tuned for round 2 when Formula D makes its way to Road Atlanta. Ryan loves this track and is set to possibly make another run at the top spot of the podium. One things for sure, he will have a large community here cheering him on! We have tons of pictures from the demolition derby that was Formula D Long Beach in our gallery, thanks to our friends at WreckedMagazine.com, for everyone to check out.
