LNF Upgrade Update – October 8th

News

Here’s a quick update from GM HPVO on the status of the LNF Turbo Upgrade kit for the Cobalt SS Turbo. As we’ve mentioned before, the way the CARB system is setup, there is no way to know an EXACT date but we hope this small update will help calm the nerves of those that have been drinking Red Bull and not sleeping ever since we announced that the kit would be available for the Cobalt SS Turbo.

The latest is this – On September 29th CARB requested the updated spread sheet of all calibration part numbers that are included in the stage kit. We [GM HPVO] updated the sheet and sent it right back. This is the spread sheet that CARB uses in their EO publication. So....We are really close!

So it looks like there is some light on the horizon. The anticipation is killing us over here and we’re sure everyone with the keys to Cobalt SS Turbo is feeling the same. Stay tuned for the latest – we’ll bring it to you as it happens!

I wasn't to drinking Red Bull yet, but i'm gona have to buy a few cases now!! LOL! This is exciting! I think the people with the aftermarket tunes are going to be impressed. With the way the HP/TQ curves are shown, the Stage I kit is going to blow some minds!

Urghhh. All this waiting is killing me. We hadn't heard anything in so long and now this. So does this mean that the 90 day waiting period has been reset and it may now be next Jan that the kit comes out? Or does this mean it is potentially a week or two away?
I know a lot of people who have been waiting decided to go with an aftermarket tune. I can't say the thought hasn't crossed my mind, but as long as the updates keep coming I'll continue to have hope. So, thank you GMTunerSource, and just keep us in the loop! Knowing is half the battle smilies/cheesy.gif

I'm not a fan of spectulation...but it sounds like what you're saying is that they have passed the upgrade and are writing up the publication that needs to go along with it!? Hopefully they type faster than they deliberate passing a calibration!

i hope this means we're about a week away from the releaes. btw, quick question, when they do give the OK, how fast is the tune available at the dealer? i have the parts already so would the tune be available to be uploaded next day or are we talkin another week after the approval?

once the kit is officially passed, you will be able to go get it reflashed, according to Mr. Duncan.

YES! So does this mean that the kit should be out at almost any time in the somewhat near future? This is definitely awesome news. Keep us posted. what does it mean that they asked for your updated spread sheet? Do they have to do more approval or is it all in the process of being finalized?

I have been watching these stage1 threads for months and recently just purchased a new 09 SS/TC. So please come out soon cause it is 15 degrees out side and snow will be on its WAY!!

Oh awesome!!!!! Just in time for the snow and ice. I definitely will not be buying this kit. Driving an SS/TC in the winter is utterly retarded without a set of badass snows on a 17" rim. Guess what that runs? About $1200. I'll be putting my money into that. I'm so fed up with all the hype and waiting for this kit.

i own a 2008 tc/cobalt.i live in alberta canada.i recently went to the dealership and asked how much the stage 1 kit is going to cost me they said $1150.How can this kit be $650 in the states and double the price in canada thats ridiculous. Was wondering if you could find out why it cost that much more in canada especially with how close the exchange rates are right now .I am really excited about this kit but not sure if i can justify paying $1150 just for the parts and then labor on top of that.I love my car funnest thing i've ever driven.I would just hate to miss out on the stage 1 kit because of the price difference is to much. Thanks for your time.

Ya, I seen that document a month ago and was curious on why it wasn’t released earlier? Not sure if they went back to the drawing board on this one or not.

Call me crazy but using a little of my own private logic this is what I come up with for the delay of our calibration. The INITIAL CARB approval for ALL LNF applications was signed last Jan. During the time between signing and actual distribution GM realized there was a glitch with our Cobalts, and instead of releasing something that really wasn't up to snuff (coke?) then rectifying the problem they determined the best plan was to hold back the Cobalt application, fix the glitch, THEN release a good product. During this time is when the automotive world took a big brown dump. Anything not imediately associated with GM's survival was put on the back burner till things got straightened out. A little. Then back to the drawing boards, I mean CAD programs, to fix our problem which they did, albiet with TWO seperate products. Then the approval process kicked in. Rather than get emissions approvals from each individual state (can you even imagine the delays THAT would have caused?) they went to the state, California, with the toughest standards that would validate the product, basically, for the entire country. If you watch the news you probably have some idea how California handles business. Veerryy sslloowwllyy! So now, here we sit with one thump in the mouth and the other in the rectum playing switch every time some body on the inside says "aannyy ddaayy nnooww".

I'm probably the most patient guy here, or at least close to the top, but I'm really beginning to think about something aftermarket. First we could blame the economy. Then GM deciding which way to go. And now the CA CARB. Who's next? A lack of dealers to do the install, due to dealer closures? For a while there I was feeling so good I quit taking my meds. I'm going back on them tomorrow. It's either that or put one round in the Glock. Somebody PLEASE give me some CONSOLING words!

Somethings that have been on my mind. I was really considering HP Tuners. There is a very reputable tuner close, within 30 miles. Being able to work all tables and graph all data collected and dyno on hand is a blessing. I then heard that the Stage I kit was a go. Talked myself into getting the stage kits as a basic upgrade. The aftermarket is so new, and with so many canned tunes out there.. I was hesitant. I say give the aftermarket a year or two to get out the bugs. Let the eager get ahead hp/tq wise, spend their money, and test what works. Pioneers in the LNF race for success is fun, but costly. I don't have unlimited funds for that. So, saving my money, doing research, and making the best decissions. I have alot of faith in the aftermarket world. Hearing the war stories, and consistant wins on the track, has inspired me to learn as much as I can about this tremendous car. It a very strong platform with so much potential. buellfooll, take a breath. Soon it will become winter. Depending on your location it could be a strong stormy one. Take pride in your purchase, and tell yourself that you are going to be the one giving new birth to the next generation of Cobalt SS success. The stage kit will become a STRONG reality, and so many happy days full of fun, wins, and warrenty. I hope this helps. Hang in there. smilies/smiley.gif

My plan is the stage 1 kit and Hahn everything (except a bigger turbo).I did not get extended warranty so I have 38 months left to do this.Should not take that longsmilies/grin.gif.After warranty ,I hope there will be a good/tested aftermarket tune for a bigger turbo with the stage 1 kit , then the motorsmilies/grin.gif. The wait sucks but I think/hope it will be worth it.

Hey Kildore. Thanks for your words of solace. I hope you realize my second paragraph was mostly a goof meant to show my frustration over this whole upgrade thing. And maybe forcing a few words of encouragement from those on the inside. It didn't work. It's just starting to get SOOOO old. I am in total agreement with your feelings on the LNF though. I breaks my heart to read about all the guys making modifications to the brakes and suspension on a car that broke the FWD 2.0 litre record at the Nurgburgring by THIRTEEN seconds. STOCK OUT OF THE BOX!!! I'd love to see how the SS/TC with the upgrade would fare.

Oh well! Back to my waiting.

Has there been any data compiled after John Heinricy took the Stage I Cobalt out for testing? Could help stoke the fire and quench our thirst.
