Buick Regal Gets LNF Power?
Written by Corey Mullane Friday, 13 November 2009
We never thought we’d cover anything with a Buick badge on it ‘cept maybe if it was followed by the GNX acronym. We feel sort of obligated to do so now however since the top brass at Buick has decided to toss in some turbocharged, direct-injected, 2-liter love that we all know as the impressive LNF powerplant. The LNF has been the force behind many of GM’s most popular tuner cars so what is the engine that gets more horsepower per liter than the Corvette ZR1’s LS9 doing under the bonnet of a Buick?
For starters, the LNF sips fuel with the best of them when the throttle is not on the floor, delivering an estimated 29mpg on the highway in the Regal. When you need to move out however, the LNF can crank out some serious power, although de-tuned to 220hp in the Regal, to get you where you’re going in a jiffy. Something tells me this bad boy needs a Stage 1 kit! Moving that power to the wheels comes via the assistance of a 6-speed auto so that means that sadly there will be no no-lift shifts in the Regal. The Regal really is going to benefit from LNF power since it’s based on the Epsilon II platform which means that the Regal is not a lightweight. Measuring at 10 inches longer than the Cobalt, the Regal has an estimated weight of 3600lbs in full production trim. The LNF is a workhorse though so we have no doubt that it’s up for the job.
One of the really impressive things about the Regal is the interior which appears to be first class all the way. Overall, the new Buick Regal looks like a homerun and a true sign of GM moving in the right direction. The future does look bright. Today at lunch (eating hot wings) we started to talk about this car. One of our friends who is a Honda LOVER through and through mentioned that he has been seeing the ads with Buick and Lexus and commented that the Buick was no joke! That was really cool to hear! With Buick going this direction, I can see more young people looking at this car as a nice daily driver (When they aren’t laying down the law in their Cobalts of course). Buick and GMTS…. Who would have ever thought?! Check them out when you get a chance. Definitely worth a look for sure!
